In order to produce electricity from coal, a special commission was conducted which was headed by First Deputy PM Mullah Abdul Ghani Beradar Akhund. In this special commission, Mullah Abdul Ghani Beradar Akhund tasked the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum for mining; the Ministry of Energy and Water for absorption and distribution of the electricity; and the officials of chambers of industry and mines for attracting investment to work under the Ministry of Energy and Water and conduct detailed technical and professional research and discussions about the mentioned aspects of the issue.

The effort to generate electricity from coal comes at a time when Afghanistan imports 80 percent of its electricity and can only generate 20 percent domestically.

Officials at Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) says that this move will help us to prevent hundreds of millions of dollars a year from flowing abroad for purchasing electricity, and it will also boost our economy and domestic industries.

According to the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum of the IEA, the Ministry can provide raw materials for the production of 1700 MW of electricity from coal for a minimum of 30 years and a maximum of 60 years.

Sherbaz Kaminzada, director of the Afghanistan Chamber of Industry and Mines, said they had talked to all Afghan and foreign investors about investing in this sector, and fortunately many of them were ready to invest.
