Today, July 31, 2025, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, Deputy PM for Economic Affairs, inaugurated the implementation phase of a 40-megawatt solar power generation project in Mohammad Agha District of Logar Province.

Deputy PM Mullah Baradar Akhund described the launch of the 40-megawatt solar power project in Logar as a valuable opportunity for the economic growth of the province and the country as a whole. He stated that upon the completion of this project, the electricity shortage in Logar will be partially resolved, industrial activities will increase, and numerous employment opportunities will be created for citizens.

The Deputy PM added that with the implementation of such projects, economic activity in Logar will rise and the electricity shortage in the Mohammad Agha Industrial Park will also be addressed.

He emphasized that electricity is a critical requirement for the development of any country and identified the lack of sufficient electricity as one of the key reasons for Afghanistan’s underdevelopment. He stated that although Afghanistan possesses vast energy generation resources, unfortunately, these resources have not been properly utilized, making the country reliant on imported electricity and costing hundreds of millions of dollars annually in payments to foreign countries.

He further noted that since the re-establishment of the Islamic Emirate, significant advancements have been made in various sectors, including the energy sector. Projects for the generation of renewable energy have been launched in different provinces, along with initiatives related to electricity distribution, regulation, support for industrial zones, and delivering electricity to the population.

He reiterated the firm commitment of the Islamic Emirate to achieving energy self-sufficiency for Afghanistan. He affirmed that the country has the potential not only to meet its own electricity demands but also to export surplus electricity to neighboring countries. However, he noted that this will require proper water resource management and efficient utilization of solar and wind energy—areas in which the Islamic Emirate is developing long-term plans.

He instructed the contractor company responsible for the project to pay close attention to the quality of work and ensure timely completion.

This project, being implemented in Mohammad Agha District of Logar Province, comprises two components:

The first component involves the construction of a 40-megawatt solar power generation plant with an estimated cost of 28 million USD.

The second component entails the construction of a 126 MVA substation and the extension of transmission lines, costing 7.6 million USD.

The project is expected to be completed within 18 months, and once operational, it will supply electricity to 40,000 households in the region and resolve the electricity shortage in the Mohammad Agha Industrial Park.
