On April 28, 2025, in the presence of the Deputy PM for Economic Affairs, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, several esteemed cabinet members, and local officials from Kandahar, Zabul, and Helmand, the remaining work on three major electricity development projects was officially launched in these provinces.

During his speech at the ceremony, Deputy PM Mullah Baradar Akhund stated that these projects are significant steps towards achieving self-sufficiency in the electricity sector, creating new employment opportunities, and strengthening infrastructure. He emphasized that, through these initiatives, the full transfer of electricity from the Kajaki Dam to Kandahar would be realized. This electricity will illuminate homes and promote industrial growth.

He further added that the Islamic Emirate is making serious efforts to generate electricity domestically from existing resources. In this regard, agreements have recently been signed with the private sector for the production of 250 megawatts of electricity from solar, wind, and gas sources across various provinces.

All officials attending the ceremony stressed the importance of expanding domestic electricity production, completing unfinished electricity projects, and ensuring the provision of necessary electricity to the industrial, commercial, and agricultural sectors.

The projects include the completion of the remaining work on the Qalat Substation in Zabul’s capital and the Kandahar East Substation, as well as the extension of a 110-kilovolt transmission line from the Kajaki power plant to the Kandahar East Substation.

The total cost of these projects is estimated to be around one billion Afghanis. Upon completion, hundreds of thousands of new consumers will gain access to electricity, and numerous employment opportunities will be created for citizens. The full completion of these projects will enable the Kajaki power plant to fully transfer its production capacity, providing the required electricity to the industrial, commercial, and agricultural sectors.
