Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund Meets the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, Deputy PM for Economic Affairs, met today Wednesday, July 8, 2026, in his office with Barham Saleh, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed the situation of Afghan refugees, humanitarian and development assistance for returning refugees, and future cooperation in support of the Afghan people. The Deputy PM expressed his appreciation to the United Nations and international organizations for their humanitarian assistance to Afghan refugees. Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund emphasized that the United Nations and international organizations should prioritize their assistance toward development initiatives so that returning refugees and internally displaced Afghans can benefit from improved access to housing, schools, electricity, clean water, employment opportunities, and other essential services.
Barham Saleh commended the efforts undertaken by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in the field of development and expressed confidence that they would make every effort to mobilize greater support from the international community for Afghanistan and help improve the living conditions of the Afghan people.
