The Fifth Section of the Hairatan–Mazar-e-Sharif Railway Has Been Reactivated

Today, Thursday, May 21, 2026, the Deputy PM for Economic Affairs, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, inaugurated the reactivation of the fifth section of the Hairatan–Mazar-e-Sharif railway in Balkh Province.

The Deputy PM commended the efforts of the Ministry of Public Works in expanding the country’s railway network and also expressed appreciation for the cooperation of the Republic of Uzbekistan. He added that economic and trade relations between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan have become stronger than before, and to further support their development, a joint committee has been established under the leadership of the Governor of Balkh, with participation from the relevant institutions.

The fifth section of the Hairatan–Mazar-e-Sharif railway consists of 70 kilometers of main railway line, 30 kilometers of branch lines, five stations, and a cargo unloading capacity of 50 wagons. The reactivation of this section is expected to create significant facilitation in increasing the volume and transportation of commercial goods.
